Here's something to scream — or laugh — about.

Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson has unveiled The Joker, its 14th roller coaster, for the thrill-seeking public.

The ride was introduced to great fanfare earlier on May 26, with a number of speakers on hand that day singing the praises of the thrilling attraction inspired by the iconic DC Comics villain. Technical difficulties caused the ride to be closed for much of its opening day, but by all accounts The Joker has been running smoothly since.

"This is so fresh, so unique, so full of total chaos," said roller coaster expert Tim Baldwin. "It is madness on rails."

A 4D, free-fly coaster, The Joker sends riders straight up a 12-story, 90-degree hill, then flips guests heads-over-heels at least six times, with riders also making leaps and dives along a horizontal plane. Riders are seated on face-off wing seats, with no track above or below them as they make two beyond-90-degree "raven" drops that give a free-falling sensation.

While that is tricky enough to put into words, the experience itself is like nothing else currently available at the Jackson destination. The seats on The Joker freely flip forward and backwards as the cars careen along the track; because the flipping chairs don't follow a set pattern, no two rides on The Joker will ever be the same.

The experience is maniacal and unpredictable, much like its funny book inspiration.

John Fitzgerald, president of Six Flags Great Adventure, said that The Joker is "in a class all by itself." The ride, he noted, "delivers gravity-defying somersaults with utter unpredictability."

The Joker joins Six Flags Great Adventure's roster of DC-inspired rides. Starting with 1993's still-thrilling Batman: The Ride, that collection includes Bizarro, Green Lantern, Harley Quinn's Crazy Train, Superman: Ultimate Flight and The Dark Knight.
