In anticipation of director Paul Feig’s reboot of the 1984 classic Ghostbusters, fans will soon be able to have their own paranormal adventure via the Ghostbusters Experience in Times Square at Madame Tussauds New York.
Opening July 1, the walk-thru attraction and virtual reality experience is a joint effort by Madame Tussauds, Ghostbusters distributor Sony Pictures, Ghost Corps (a Columbia Pictures’ Ghostbusters branding subsidiary) and immersive tech firm The Void.
Ghostbusters: Dimension is a first-person VR experience through which the guest becomes a Ghostbuster in a CG version of a New York apartment from the upcoming film. Each guest wears a VR head set created by immersive tech firm The Void and are provided a “proton pack” allowing them to “hunt ghosts” in the virtual environment. The experience was made by The Void in collaboration with Feig, Ghostbusters creator Ivan Reitman and Sony Pictures.
“The technology is breathtaking, the experience is thrilling and what better way is there to use VR than to let audiences inhabit the stories they love,” Reitman said Monday in a statement.
In the second part of the experience, guests (without VR goggles) walk through several rooms where the attraction includes a subway set and Ghostbusters headquarters. It features props from the new movie, the Ecto-2, costumes, gadgets and “ghost hunting.” Figures of the lead castmembers of the new film also are in the plans.
The Ghostbusters reboot is set to open July 15 and stars Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones.
